Since it attenuates high frequencies the filtered segment will sound a bit muffled. Cut-off frequency or 3-dB frequency is defined as the frequency of the input signal at which, the magnitude of the output signal reduces to \$1/\sqrt2\$ of the input, or the power reduces to half ( i.e., by 3 dBs). The following formula can be used to calculate a cutoff frequency. The first filter is a first order lowpass with cutoff frequency 1kHz.
